What other jar files do I need to run Linguine Watch SNMP agent?

None. It is sufficient to add only one oy-lw.jar file to the classpath. This jar file has no dependencies.

What are the most common performance counters I should learn to use?
Please read it here.

Do I need to write MIB files by hand to be able to monitor my application with SNMP?

No. Linguine Watch generates MIB files automatically thus saving you from the need to learn MIB file format and writing the file by hand. Here is an example MIB file from Tutorial 1.

How do I change SNMP server port number or snapshot file name?
Please read it here.

Are there any free SNMP monitoring software products to use with Linguine Watch?

Yes. To see the counters at work and to plot the counter values in real-time, AdventNet SNMP Utilities 4 package can be used for activities that need frequent (1 s) collection policy. This professional quality package has an MIB browser and has good SNMP monitoring support in a limited-time free trial. Any other SNMP monitoring package will do as long as it supports SNMP v1.0. You will need an MIB file to properly choose the counters for monitoring. All sample applications automatically produce MIB files when they are started. These file can be found in the C:\Documents and Settings\%USER_NAME% folder.

Can I see the monitoring data without SNMP monitoring software?

Yes. PerfAgent can also produce an HTML file snapshot that contains data for all counters defined in the project. By default, all sample applications have this options enabled. This file is updated once every 5 seconds and placed in the C:\Documents and Settings\%USER_NAME% folder.
