Several other projects out there are similar to Linguine Maps. In every case a tool will draw a diagram of sorts.

But Linguine Maps has a key advantage. Many other tools are focused on visualization of one kind of schema. Linguine Maps was designed to be reusable for visualization of graphs in general – any graphs that come to mind.

Linguine Maps allows any developer to visualize his own metadata. Many development teams have variety of in-house metadata files or many instances of custom XML documents that might need visualization. These teams can use Linguine Maps to visualize these documents. Linguine Maps fully hides complexity of Graphviz. It is so simple to create a diagram – anyone can do it! Here is simple Java example.

Many other tools are useful and have helped to create a vision for Linguine Maps. These tools are (I am sure there is more that I do not know about):

Spring BeanDoc BeanDoc is the tool that facilitates documentation and graphing of Spring bean factories and application context files. uses Graphviz; the simple DOT file generator based on XSLT transform of XML trees
OntoViz The OntoViz Tab allows you to visualize Protégé ontologies. uses Graphviz; OntoViz is a mature visual environment for graph exploration; it is fully interactive and supports visual editing
